You're Journaling All Wrong

If the idea of putting to paper the mundane day-to-day turns you off to journaling, you’re not alone! Will your posterity really want to uncover grandma or grandpa’s old journals only to read about what you ate for breakfast or picked up at Target that week? And besides—isn’t that what social media is for?

Turns out, journaling is actually a powerful exercise to break away from said social media and other stressors in life. The key is to find accessible journaling styles that fit into your schedule and help you discover enjoyment in writing. Read on for some ideas on how to get into journaling.

3 Simple IDEAS TO JOURNAL BETTER

1 - Gratitude Entries

Jotting down 1-3 things you’re grateful for is not only a small time investment (this exercise can be as short as a few minutes), but these entries serve as a wonderful snapshot you can revisit if you’re having a tough day and need a pick-me-up.

2 - Use Prompts

Let’s be real; writers and creative block is a thing. A blank page or canvas can be intimidating. Provide some framework for yourself, and dedicate a week’s (or just a few days) worth of entries to one particular topic. Here are some journaling prompts:

  • Dream Journaling

  • Journaling Outdoors

  • Secret Confessions

  • Favorite Places You’ve Visited

3 - Talk it Out -> Write it Out!

If in a state of conflict with someone (employer, friend or family member) or in the early stages of a project or big life change, use your journal as a place to write out all your initial thoughts and emotions. Expressing these early on could bring clarity to your situation and make for a better, more productive conversation or meeting when that time comes.

Just start

These are just a few ways you can fit journaling into your lifestyle. With so many benefits to journaling, it’s a worthwhile practice to incorporate into your daily routine. Your journal is supposed to be a reflection of you!
